Container Loading & Discharge
BCT's container handling operations are powered by five ship-to-shore (STS) gantry cranes, supported by a fleet of rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) and terminal tractors. Our yard and quay operations run continuously, enabling rapid vessel turnaround and reliable service for shipping lines calling at the Port of Riga.
Ship-to-Shore Crane Fleet
Our five post-Panamax STS gantry cranes are capable of handling vessels up to 18 container rows wide. Key operational data:
- Outreach: 63 metres (18+ container rows)
- Back reach: 20 metres
- Lift height: 42 metres above rail
- Simultaneous twin-lift operations for increased productivity
- Average crane productivity: 25–30 moves per crane hour
Ro-Ro & Lo-Lo Capabilities
BCT supports both Lo-Lo (lift on / lift off) and Ro-Ro (roll on / roll off) operations, providing flexibility for shipping lines operating multipurpose vessels. Dedicated Ro-Ro ramps ensure efficient handling of wheeled cargo alongside standard container operations.
Yard Operations
The terminal yard is equipped with rubber-tyred gantry cranes that manage container stacking and retrieval. The yard management system integrates with the vessel planning system to optimise crane sequencing and minimise vessel dwell time. Container tracking is available in real time through the BCT online tracking portal.
