Our History

Baltic Container Terminal has a rich heritage rooted in the strategic importance of the Port of Riga as a gateway for containerised trade in Northern Europe and beyond.

1980s

The Port of Riga was selected as the main entry point for containerised cargo from the industrial centres of the former Soviet Union. This decision established Riga as a critical hub for container logistics in the region.

1996

BCT commenced its operating activities within the Freeport of Riga, marking the beginning of a new era in container handling at the port. The terminal quickly established itself as a reliable partner for shipping lines and cargo owners.

1999

Mariner acquired full ownership of BCT, bringing new strategic direction and investment capability to the terminal. This acquisition laid the foundation for the significant growth that followed.

2000s

A period of significant investment in infrastructure, equipment and staff training transformed BCT into a modern, efficient container terminal. New cranes, expanded storage areas and advanced IT systems were introduced to meet growing demand.

Present

BCT has become the fastest growing container terminal in the Baltic States, serving as a gateway to the CIS countries. The terminal continues to invest in its facilities and services, maintaining its position as a leader in the region.
